Gated Communities

‘I’d like to get to know our neighbours, but its hard when they only ever emerge from their electric gates in blacked out cars’

‘What is it with HUGE electric gates in Croydon neck of the woods?’

Just two recent comments on Twitter about the social impact of gated communities and homes. There is no question that there is a rise in automatic gate usage in the UK, but it is still not nearly as prevalent as in many other countries such as the US or Brazil. So, do the benefits of gated communities , including increased safety, privacy and reassurance, outweigh any negative perceptions? What are your thoughts? 1. It's actually quite an academic question to me - my front door opens onto a village street and I have no private parking!

Most new property developments include electric gates (where this is practical) because developers know that it will increase the value of the properties they are selling - I have heard by 5-10%.

My guess is that there may be a positive impact WITHIN gated communities - e.g. children are more likely to "play in the street" just like I used to do. It's also self-evident that this may create a social divide.

I don't think that any blame can be laid on electric gates "per se". These products were only developed to meet a market demand - which was driven by increased road traffic, increased crime and increased fear of crime (for which thank you, Daily Mail).

I am unbelievably lucky to live where I live - a small village - where people meet each other by doing old fashioned things like participating in the village fete and "going for a walk". There are indeed people in my community who have electric gates but this does not stop me from knowing them!

    It's not a technology issue, it's a societal issue!

  2. Electric gates alone, however solid and imposing they may be, cannot guarantee a completely secure environment electric locks, are often needed to boost the locking effectiveness of the gate motors.
